Fresh bait?
Trap that works and know how to work it?
If you can check those off, it comes down to location and timing.  If you have half an idea about a location you really shouldn't experience getting totally skunked anywhere if you have checked off #1 and 2.  It will help to crab when the tide is running (not slack high or low).

give us some details, there's plenty of people here who will go out of their way to help.  Describe the last trip.  Bait, location, traps, from boat or land, what tide, estimated depth.  It's all in the details  Wink

we went to woodland beach. we bought i think chicken necks and hearts or something. had two traps one thats solid rectangle with a little door on everyside the other is a box that the sides fold up and down. they both work on land, how do you know if the traps work once they are in the water?  it was midday when we were walking up, a guy walking out said he caught about twenty but he had 4 traps two the boxy ones.

I am not a expert on traps but would guess that if they work on land they work in the water (if the line is long enough).  Maybe he was leaving cause the crabs had stop?  Huh Like above, Tide stopped?

Delaware bay has fast moving water, you've stated that:  "the line was slack and seemed to be drifting a little"  If you were in the bay, then you hit slack water, which doesn't produce as well as moving water.

Couple more questions:

How deep was the water?
Were you crabbing the bay or one of the creeks?
Did the baits appear to have been chewed?
What was the total number of hours you crabbed?
What was the exact day, date & time you crabbed?
