Crabbing on hold

I had to put my crab traps on the dock for a while. Shrimp!!! It is shrimping time on Georgia's beautiful coast. With the storm off of the coast this week has been to rough to go out on the water. Saturday I will be castnetting for those jumbo shrimp. I will freeze enough to last me through the winter and until the next shrimping season. Shrimp are everywhere here on Georgia's Sounds and rivers. These beautiful white shrimp are so much better than those pond raised Chinese and those far asian shrimp at Wal-Mart or Sam's Club.

Those big Georgia wild shrimp are in my freezer. We caught two 48 quart coolers full of big "cobb shrimp". In Georgia a cobb shrimp is one that is the size of a corn cobb. It was a beautiful day on the water. After catching our legal limit of shrimp we cast netted for some bait shrimp and went trout and redfish fishing. Yes, we caught the limit fishing for these great tasting game fish.

Great report and those "cobb shrimp" sound interesting! Any pictures of one?
In Florida they get large shrimp...to about eight inches, horn to tail.
I have not been shrimping yet, It's on my bucket list!
Do you use shrimp lights in Georgia?
Also, do you bait for them there?

Shellfish, to answer some of your questions about shrimping in Georgia.
1. your fishing license will work for recreational castnetting for shrimp
2. you can use taped castnets
3. only one 48 quart cooler per recreational boat per day
4. you can use lights at night
5. you cannot use any type of bait to lure shrimp
6. cobb shrimp is a shrimp measuring from the tip of the horn to the tip of the
   tail. This is about 8 inches.
7. I use a 1/2 inch mesh 8 foot taped cast net
8. the tape helps keep the net open during it journey to the bottom.
9. These shrimp are located in 15-50 foot water depth

coastman, Thanks for the reply. I belong to several east coast forums and I have been reading about baiting from the South Carolina shrimpers. I have no intention of shrimping in SC or GA but they are good sites to pick up tips and techniques. I will be shrimping, someday, in the Mosquito Lagoon just south of Daytona Florida. They use box nets off the boat or just dip them with nets and lights. I don't know of anybody that uses a cast net there but they do use them in the St Johns River (FL). I think SC also has a 48 qt limit but Florida has a five gallon limit (personal use). The boys are out checking for compliance every night!
I have posted a couple of pictures showing a couple of jumbos and a pail of average sized Florida shrimp from the Lagoon.

      Wow they are some awesome........ :laugh:looking shrimp,when we buy large shrimp there are about 26 count to the lb,how many of your shrimp to the lb.

Your lucky to be able to catch your own,i wish i could because i like shrimp as much as crabs

Those are "borrowed" photos but all caught in the Lagoon. I have yet to catch my first shrimp.
These are what, I hope, will be waiting when I retire!

I will have to start taking a camera with me. I will have to learn how to upload a photo to this site. I am technology challenged. Those look like "cobb shrimp". For the shimp bait mixture the formula is fish meal and clay. I use fish meal and marsh mud. Just mix the ratio 50/50, roll into a ball and let the marsh mud dry. These will make a hard round ball. Just dump it in the water and the shrimp will come to it.

It's not hard to post a photo. Believe me of I can do it you can do it. The biggest problem is resizing the photo first. After it is resized I paste it on my desktop. After you write your message at the bottom of the screen there is a "browse" button. Click on that and choose desktop and then just click the appropriate photo. Done
The larger shrimp are probably around ten to a pound. The mediums in the bucket might be 34's or so?

Yes, those big shrimp are still beign caught with a cast net in Sapelo Sound. I will shrimp and crab this weekend. It will be tough but someone has to do this.

If I could catch shrimp like that I might never crab when the shrimp are around. So much less work to eat and so many ways to prepare them.
