Hi All, I have already posted, asking for info. on where to take my children crabbing during our vacation this summer. Everyone has been very helpful. While we are vacationing we will probably look for a place to live in the Outer Banks area. I currently work in the oil fields. I would have to travel by air to and from work. So the main question that I would have is, where is the closest International Airport to the Outer Banks area? Also, if I could get info. on a small town within an hour or less from the coast, "that would be a nice place to live", it would be greatly appreciated. Considering that I will be purchasing a round trip air ticket once a month and I will be in the process of selling my home here in Minnesota, I will not be in the position to buy a home right away. So in the begining, I would be looking to rent. I will be leaving early tomorrow for work and will not be around a computer for 15 days, so if I do not reply to any messages right away, this is the reason. Thanks to you all ahead of time. Ive been to OBX a few time and dont remember any intenational Air port anywhere on or around 13.  You would probably have to drive an hour to get to one then fly to work.  Wow what a commute!  Must be good money in them fields.  Are you a rough neck or crew chief?

I believe that your closest international airport is going to be Raleigh - Durham Interational in the north central part of North Carolina. I think that will be closer than Charlotte.

Mr. Ray, I was thinking that while I would be home for 12 to 13 days from the rig, you may want to hire a hard worker like myself so I can pay for that plane ticket  laugh

I used to go on vacation every year down OBX.  Then things got so exspensive, we stayed closer to home.  I would get off the boat some years a day after the family got there, fly to Norfolk and get picked up there.
I just got several catalogs in the mail for 2009 and the prices are still high.  The last cheap week before in season is the week my daughter graduates high school.  The next week it doubles.  I loved going.  We used to get a soundfront place around Avon and I would throw my small skiff on top my truck and use it for crabbing and fishing. All I had to do was drift in the grassy shallows(1-2') and dip crabs off the bottom and throw them in the boat, no bait, no traps.
If I can afford it this year, I am going back.
I found this pic of the pier at the last house we rented on Askins Creek in Avon.

Visiting and living in a hurricane area is two different things..... Ya need to concider the stress that a impending storm will put on your family.. Especially if you are not there.. And can't get there....

Thats so true.  I wouldn't even rent some years after july because I was afraid I would get hit and have to evacuate during vacation.

Yeah, I understand the severe storm situation. I grew up anywhere from New Bern NC, Florence SC, Rock Hill SC, Lynchburg VA. But I appreciate the info. I have spoken with my wife about those situations and I would make sure that she was not one of those that thinks "The storm will probably miss us, so we're staying put"! She is the type that would beat you all out of town anyway  laugh
