Gene, I might just take you up on that. I do a fair amount of crabbing up here on the Chesapeake (Gunpowder and Wye Rivers) and would enjoy a day out with a waterman. I'll keep in touch. Thanks for the offer.

I think you would enjoy a day on the water with a waterman. the knowledge of fish and the water that is available is astounding. Couple that with Gene's 'robust' personality, and you have the makings of a great day. I only wish I could spend a day crabbing with him. If you are down there and don't hook up with Gene, you're making a mistake.

Check with your rental agent. I rent in Avon on the soundfront, and every couple houses will have their own ramp. Just ask to see if you can use one before the people check in. The ramp in Frisco is at the marina. Nice people, they let me crab from their bulkhead one day.

i have stayed in avon for the last 15 years and just started taking a small boat the last 3 years. i only have a small 15/15 aluminum jon boat i take along. i launch at hatteras and keep it in the water at the marina. there is also a boat ramp at the fudge shop in frisco( not sure if you knew about that one )but the sound is wide and very shallow. you will be on sand alot!!!!! even following the markers i dug alot and in a small boat.if you really want to catch fish, put in in hatteras. unless you just want to take a ride here and there... I will be there from the last saturday in may for a week.oceanfront across from food lion..

check out his ( FP ) post in the fishing section. I was down the same week he was and I caught one cobia 20 lbs. missed hooking another cobia around 50 lbs... caught 20 spanish makerel and a few small trout and lost a nice 4-5 lb trout at the boat......He said he did real well on the flounder.... and if you get a chance go out with Gene......I did that too... had a great time telling stories and jokes..... had em all LTAO............... You will learn a bit tooo.. never been out crab potting before so it was pretty cool to see that many traps get pulled that fast... and thant many crabs everytime.....
oh and BTW Jack, I think I even spared Gene the ankle story.......

Thanks for the help guys. My rental agent came through for me and alerted me to a guy near the Froggy Dog.

. Already contacted him and turns out he is very reasonable and close to my house, thanks.

I'm just a Commercial Crabber, Rockfish.. I catch hard and soft shell crabs, in season..I live in Kill Devil Hills if you want to go out on the boat one day just give me a call..252 202 6469
Just to let everyone know, I did go out on Gene's boat and I have to say that even though the crabbing was slow by his standards, it was a good time. Fished 450 pots and only brought back 16 bushels. I still had a great time culling crabs and learning how to do it right (hope I didn't accidentally throw too many #1's in the #2's basket ; ) ). Gene is a great guy with an outstanding personality. The trip I made with him and his helper was very enjoyable and made my vacation truly memorable. Thanks again Gene! Tell you Father-in-Law it was nice meeting him, and I wish I could have talked to him more.
