This looks like good news: Total number of crabs overwintering in Chesapeake Bay increased from 280 million in 2007-2008 to just over 400 million in 2008-2009. • The increase was primarily due to a doubling in the number of adult female crabs, though adult male abundance also increased by 50 %. • Overall adult abundance in 2008-2009 was 243 million crabs – slightly over the target of 200 million set by the Chesapeake Bay Stock Assessment Committee

The YOY looks pretty consistent with last years numbers, hopefully, if the lower female harvest last season actually helps, there should be an increase for the 09/10 survey.
I also like how they had to pat themselves on the back in their summary points.

I'm no expert but I think that 243 is more than slightly higher than 200 million (20%+).

It is what I expected... Yeah they are patting themselves for a 50% increase in the adult male population, yet no restrictions that have been imposed have had a chance to effect that part of the population. I smell a big fat government stinky... So we should be thanking Mother Nature at this point.

ST, yeah I have to agree. I can see what they did by limiting the female harvest directly increasing the number of mature females..... but he males went up 50% in one year..... doubt that was one year of the implementation of their new plans.... like you said.. more thanks to mother nature/ weather etc...but like a good politician.. they will take any and all credit whenever possible........

At least the logic behind the management plan makes sense. The 46% target harvest should increase the population each year, which then increases the harvest.
I agree about the unexplained male population increase. That self-congratulatory comment even looks out of place with all the other statements. Maybe I should call and thank them for the warm sunny day they provided today. Thanks be to DNR for all things good and righteous.

But what about the blame BAHAHAHA. Blame? If there is blame, you can bet they will plant it squarely on the shoulders of the commercial crabbers.

I wouldn't be surprised if they held last years numbers down to show an increase in this years numbers knowing they were going to implement the 34% reduction. No science here, they are just fudging numbers and playing political grandstanding.

It was an article written back in July of 08. My point is how could it have rebound like they said and adult males increased 50% if the Feds said they were in peril this past summer. An overall rebound of 30% in 6 months? I DON"T THINK SO DNR!

What is real interesting is the biologists on the boats (as well as the people running the boats) that do the WDS, were told to not say a word about the survey. Under penalty of job loss.
Why the big secrets???
