Put in at Neavitt and ran 8 strings of 20 traps this morning in Balls Creek... Nada.

Water surface temp was 64, and depth varied between 4 - 7 feet. Cry

I was wondering the same thing. Thought I'd missed something.

I laid out 20 traps to a string.  Then ran the string 8 times (actually I ran the string 2 times in 4 different locations).

Don't think Ball's Creek is much deeper than about 8' or so.  I figured that since it was so warm and the water temp was in the 60's that a few crabs might be coming to the shallow, warmer water.  As it turns out, not a great idea Roll Eyes

I guess I could have gone out to the Choptank into deeper water; just never thought of it.  Being recently retired, this is the first time I've crabbed this early.  So, looks like I have a lot to learn.

Your theory is sound however you forgot that you are trying to catch the crabs that didn't quite make it to the far deep spots Shocked Shocked  In the early season try to find a shallow spot that is near deeper water.  That should get you started on one of the things to look for.  There are other components like structure, bottom make up, tide and wind to name a few.  I'd start a crabbing journal and use as much detail in the entries you make.  In a couple of years you'll be able to go and always catch some.......... I agree,Saturday I crabbed from 15-30ft never caught a crab under 20ft.I also agree with keeping a log, I record every crabbing, hunting and fishing trip for years to come. It's also fun just to go back and read them.Good Luck!
