from what i can tell the states rank like this with big crab

1. louisiana
2. florida
3. texas
4. mississippi
5. alabama
6. north carolina
7. maryland
8. delaware
9. south carolina
10. pensilvania
11. new jersy

Still haven't seen one from Louisiana anywhere near the size of the one RD just posted. I think the ranking should put Florida on top, not exactly sure where Louisiana should rank. But until some proof is offered you can't claim the top spot. policeman policeman policeman

Hey, I have nothing but proud admiration for Virginia's monster crab and the skill it took to handline that trophy. I just felt my state was slighted by throwing us in the can with "the rest" when the most obvious choice for "camera challenged " didn't even get listed in the maligned group. It looks like we have some good guys locally and we catch pretty decent crabs. Our big ones are in mumbo range by anyone's standard. It's water off a duck's back now. If you catch a real nice one share a pic. Very nice crabs RD and thanks for the pics, Florida has got some good crabs walking around this year.

That's why MD NRP are always pulling those NC trucks over and issuing citations for 4 3/4" crabs.  And I don't mean a fishing citation.

buddy of mine is a PhD in marine biology and is the chief marine scientist for the University of Virginia. Anywho, just started talking to him again after not seeing him for a decade or more while he was studying in Florida for his doctorate.  Long story short, I asked him about the VA state record.  He said he'd look into it.  He found out where the crab was, I guess someone had it preserved, and whoever had it gave it to him.  So, he said it was 11".... I guess there's a chance I could ask him to try and get a picture of it now (on a ruler if possible)... just thought to mention it in this thread as it is a mumbo I have heard about but never seen...  I trust the guy and bet the story is legit but 11" would probably be up near the top of any state's record books...

I trust your loyalty PM, but I have tracked down more than one over 10 inch crabs in Va.  Everyone that had a ruler put on it did not measure up..  Sad I had a really good lead last summer.  Told Tat about it and hoped to get it mounted.   More than one guy swore it was easily over 10 inches, out on Tangiers, but it was not. Someday I hope to see a 10+ crab before I go to the big crabb'en ground in the sky..

Well alright gents.. because the guy is a scientist, I'd hope he has at least measured it as opposed to assuming that what someone told him was correct.  I knew the guy since grade school.  I was totally impressed when I heard he got his PhD.  Started talking ocean and bay stuff and he was all over it.  I think he has a Capt. take him out on boats and they/he can pretty much catch and study whatever they want... sounded really cool...  I'll PM him on another board where I keep in touch with him and see if he can get the pics.  I'm damned curious as well.  I think he's in Richmond or around there.  Hope it comes through.  I mail him tonight and circle back when he replies...  Hope I can fulfill the lifelong wishes of some BCA pals... but, will be bummed out if it falls through...  Undecided
