Just wanted to get a little feed back on whether New Jersey should change there size limit to 5 inches instead of 4.5.   I really think if we did change the size limit like Maryland there should be more around.  Let me know what you guys think.

I don't see any difference between the # of crabs in NJ where I crab and down in Delaware (which has a 5" size limit.)

OC said it..set your own size limit at five inches, no girls.. Wink Grin

Almost forgot..NJ ain't gonna do nuthin' cause they do not now nor have they ever had a clue when it comes to crabbing. A few old farts from the local town hall meeting back in 18..er 194.. er 55
whilst passing the jug and with absolutely no clue as to what, or how crabs behaved, multiplied, molted, or anything else drew up the first and only crab regs. Not one solitary marine biologist or anyone with half an idea ever bucked the system to straighten it out for fear of losing there pension when then public found out how little they knew. Then or now. A few have excepted a couple monetary grants on false pretenses of saying they know how to aid the crab population and health. Have been hounding Port Republic and the powers that be for 4 years. Talk about dancing.. Roll Eyes ol' Lt. er Capt. Chicahoohoo has more answers than any one person could come up with. Starting with..."that's the way it's written'' .. "State is in a money crisis".."it'll take two years or more to get it done".. That was four and a half years ago and that's the same argument he'll offer today. Real mental giants on the ol' payroll waitin' for pension time. Your usual political "lipservice".. as though some one aske them to actually get off their a$$e$ and do something besides readingf what their officers in the field did the prior month and the fine monies it put in
the coffers. And boys and girls, the head hauncho actually carries a loaded firearm. SCAREY !!!

Sounds like typical NJ politics and scratching of heads.  Maybe one day I will try to do something, but in this state it probably won't go far.  The way I see it, the chances of a size change are about the same as finding Jimmy Hoffa's body, ain't gonna happen.  laugh laugh laugh

I don't think that changing the size will make that much of a difference. Stupid people are still stupid people. I was crabbing north of the east gate of Ft. Monmouth  on a bridge and was pissed that two Asian fellows were taking pretty much what was caught. they did ask me a few times what was the minimum, and was this particular one big enough. then I saw them take a pair of pliers and snip off the bottom part of the claw so they could not pinch. that was cruel and I was fuming. This was monday, and I called a number I had to report ,buy mail box was full. So what does one do?

What exactly was the problem here?

First you say they kept everything, but then note that they asked you "a few times" about minimum sizes and about the sizes of specific crabs in particular.   Are you saying they asked for the advice and then ignored you when you told them they had undersized crabs?

I've always been 5" and No (females), so changing to 5 wouldn't be a problem.

Regarding the gentleman on the bridge, 5, 4, 3, 2, 1, inches wouldn't matter. If they could figure a way to eat them, they keep them. That's their culture. But, they gotta learn so make the calls. I do whenever I see it. Had an argument last fall with a Vietnamese father and son about their "Atlantic City Shuffle" at the 'Squan inlet. This is when you catch a short blackfish and walk it back ( in a plastic bag) to a cooler in your vehicle. People took pictures of it at all of these jetties in AC last year. The CO's finally made a bust here and there, but there's a whole lot more people willing to cheat than there are CO's to cover the territory. Get loud like I did, and get on the phone. Even if you get the voice mail and it's full, talk anyway. They have no clue and if you can stop them that day, that's a day you won a battle. I called several times and started arguing with the kid about the small fish in the bag. Amazingly, a couple of Benny sightseers, you know, they park at the inlet and walk around, asking everybody if they caught anything, start to defend him. He's fishing and has a right to keep what he catches they say. I love these morons who get involved in things that are foreign to them. I told them I'll report them for assisting in the poaching. Anyway, I called the CO, but they never showed. The fish guerrillas, however, left with the small tog still biting.  So, I couldn't get a legal keeper and I sure as [Sam Hill] am not going to let those ignorant cheating poachers get short fish. They know the law, they just think they can claim ignorance because of the language differences. So, being a fine and committed conservationist American, I take the time to teach our ignorant cheating immigrant friends the law and why they should obey it.

Oh, I forgot, I'm not particularly racist as I will report any red blooded, flag waving, John Birch card carrying cheating ignorant American that I see poaching.

I called them what they were "Asian" If they were Polish like me, i would say "Polocks". you have to describe them in some way. Besides stupid,  language is no excuse. We could not get away with that in "their" country.

The sheer arrogance of someone going through the motions of pretending to be concerned about the size limitations only to then ignore it when you tell them is mind boggling.     Angry

There's not problem with the description.    Asians are Asians as I am a Caucasian.

I do think, however, we need to be careful not to paint an entire race with a single broad stroke, as has been done elsewhere in this thread.
