You guys are right about the camera adding a little bit to the crab... This one measured 8-1/2 with the tape, however, the camera added a bit more. Hmmmm , maybe I could use it for something else?

PC, I don't think it is the camera, it's the ruler. The tape measure bends and it is difficult to hold steady while he is alive, especilly on a boat, and the most decptive shot is placing it underneath. Based on my bad experience, my 9" went down to 8 3/4's, use a straight ruler and measure on top of the shell. Here's the picture that looked like a 9 but isn't. He looked the same on the boat as the camera shot. But later I went home and took a straight ruler from the top in a steady secure position and well not what I thought he was.
I measured him with the ruler underneath and he was just about a 9" with no slack. 1/4" difference. Use a tape measure that bends and it is even a bigger disparency. Look at Howards crab in the MD reports, he said it was only 9 1/8 but it sure looked like a 10" in the picture. He measured underneath in the photo w a tape measure. But the crab only gets smaller, they don't seem to ever get bigger.
I will only measure my crabs with a straight ruler for final measurement from now on, though when he is on a table the tape measure is fine on top because you can take your time to make sure it is straight.
Just my thoughts.

I caught this 9 incher in the Hillsborough Bay near Tampa, FL.
He has a 19 inch wingspan!
We were on the 24hr news station, Bay News 9!
What is the Florida record?
What is the Tampa Bay area record?

Ok guys..heres the deal..these are some beautiful crabs..no doubt...but it is awfully tough for me to ascertain the true size of any crab posted as to its true size due to lighting, camera angles, distance etc...so I am up for any suggestions as to what we can use for a reference point...for instance...back in the day,we would use a standard matchbook opened wide, which is roughly 4 1/2 inches to measure whether a crab was legal or not(NJ regs)..I don't wish to discredit anyone,or insult them, but without "personally seeing the shell or the crab,i cannot honestly say which crab is the biggest..so if anyone has a suggestion on what we can use as a "universal " starting point..lemme know..
..as an afterthought..I would then notify the person wishing to submit their claim that a picture of their crab with the "universal" starting point would be necessary to be considered...in no way would this system be perfect..but it would be a start

How about something like a slide rule? See photo!
Might be a neat idea to have calipers, like in the photo, made with the Blue-Crab.org logo on 'em. Sell them to make a little money for the website or give them away as freebees for a generous donation to the website. They could be the "official" measuring device of blue-crab.org.
