The reason that I put Old Bay on the shirt is because it's more synonymous with steamed crabs (i.e., more people know what Old Bay is than J.O.)

Personally, I like to mix the two (Old Bay and J.O.). My "secret" spice is actually the following:

1 part Old Bay
1 part J.O. #1
2 parts coarse Kosher salt

I've used this "secret" blend twice on you folks (once at Mattamuskeet and again at the White Stone party) and everyone raved about how good it was!  Wink

My grandmothers used Old Bay and that's all I've ever known.  My Grandma Malone makes the BEST crab soup ever!  I'm hoping to get her recipe for that and for her crab cakes and salmon cakes.  Never had JO.  At least I don't think I have.  I think Old Bay is good.  I think it's a preference thing---like Coke vs Pepsi and what beer goes good with steamed crabs. I doctor up Old Bay with kosher salt, cayenne pepper, cracked black pepper, white pepper & a little garlic powder. I like 'em hot & spicy. If your nose is dripping a little, they're just right.  Grin Cool

Yep, plus its the cost of the two.. I am not sure but 25lbs box of JO has to be ALOT less than Old Bay in them little cans.

You can buy 32 ounce bottles of Old Bay at Sam's Club or Costo pretty cheap.

the JO store is near 695 and 295 in baltimore

I use jo for crabs and old bay for french fries, soups etc.
a place on the eastern shore buys jo, mixes it with something and sells it.  it must be blow because the stuff is addictively good

The Eastern Shore Stuff your talking about may be the Wye River Seafood Spice. I stick to my J.O. , get it in 50 lb. boxes, I'm usually pretty generous and give about 1/2 away over the course of the year because I often hear its the best spice they have tasted on crabs if someone is an Old Bay fan. I do prefer a touch of Old Bay in my tuna or chicken salad, or to dress up some dishes! JO is a little to course and a little to salty for that.
When it comes to JO, I prefer the #1 over the #2

Old Bay is OK, but JO is fabulous! It gives you the dusty, spicy, salty taste that's so addictive. Alright, it's the crabs that are so addictive. Has anyone had the black pepper crabs they serve mostly in the south? Very different, but good too.
