Aahh...brings back memories of the old "Gordon's of Orleans St." in Baltimore where just 2 or 3 of their largest crabs was a meal!!!

Haven't posted here in a while.

My wife and I used to live just south of Baltimore, Maryland.  We moved to Florida a little over a year ago.  We love it here.  However back in the 80's we bought crabs all the time and quite often I'd keep the biggest in the bunch and measure it.  I frequently measured crabs that were over 9 inches.  The biggest that I recall was 9 1/4 point to point.  Sometimes when a crab was that big and muddy it was actually hard to crack the shell of the claws with the little wooden hammers and I'd have to use a metal butter knife.

Unfortunately it's been quite a while since I've had ones that size.  I've seen some for sale that were quite close but for the last 8 or 9 years the price has simply kept me from buying them.  At anywhere from $79 to $110 a dozen I can't afford them and have to settle for the smaller ones.

Now we're just northwest of Tampa and they're actually hard to find here and I haven't seen that many big ones.  A few weeks ago I lucked into some large ones and kept a shell that measures 8 inches.  I was happy to find some that big!

Sorry to ramble here.  You all take care.

Maybe this season, last year was good with some big crabs but nothing even over 9 (at least not in the contest.  Maybe some of those big guys that escaped last season will hit the 10 inch mark.  Grin

Of by the way, only 8 1/4 for me.  Betting that will get surpassed this year.

A 10'' crab is HUGE.  That is as big as the wheel on my winder.  If I catch a crab that big, I'll need one of them things the dog catcher's use.
