Reporting
Alex DeMetrick GRASONVILLE, Md. (AP) ― CBS
04-14-2010

Maryland Gov. Martin O'Malley says the Chesapeake Bay blue crab population has increased 60 percent over the last year.

O'Malley, who is speaking about the health and future of the crab fishery Wednesday at a Grasonville restaurant, says a dredge survey showed the crab population is at its highest level since 1997.

Alex DeMetrick reports it's estimated there are 658 million crabs in the bay.

"While we are making progress, our work is not done and we are committed to working with our partners to achieve our ultimate goal of a self-sustaining fishery that will support our industry and recreational fisheries over the long term," said O'Malley.

Last week, the Chesapeake Bay Program issued a report card showing the health of the Chesapeake Bay has improved slightly, including improvements in the dwindling crab population.

Virginia and Maryland have taken steps to cut the harvest by a third, including shortening the season and not allowing hibernating pregnant females to be raked from the bottom.

Maryland officials said Wednesday that it's too early to say if the 2008 restrictions will be eased.

Because of the increased numbers in the bay, crabbers are expected to have more crabs per pot this summer.

60% is quite at bit in a year hopefully when the published report is realeased we will have a better understanding of the Winter Dredge Report. On a side note the reports I have gotten so far from some of my friends crabbing off bridges in Dorchester Co. have been better than the last few years.

that would be smart - should put them a couple of steps back from where they started...

How do they "not allow pregnant females to be raked from the bottom"?
Does the dredge know the difference?  Roll Eyes
Seriously, if they do dredge them up and release them, what is the survival rate?
Or do they avoid areas where there is a large concentration of females? Is there such a thing? Anyone?

The article sounds like good news. I hope it holds true. Have a great season everyone.
