How do they "not allow pregnant females to be raked from the bottom"?
Does the dredge know the difference?  Roll Eyes
Seriously, if they do dredge them up and release them, what is the survival rate?
Or do they avoid areas where there is a large concentration of females? Is there such a thing? Anyone?

The article sounds like good news. I hope it holds true. Have a great season everyone.

It is very simple. . .  you close the crab dredge fishery altogether and pay the crabbers to catch ghost crab pots.

Oh and the survival rate is not good additionally there is a certain amount of crabs that are killed by the gear when holes are poked in their shells by the dredge and they are not caught.  The dead bycatch number is like 100% of those kept.

Tom Powers, Im tired of you altogher.  Your nothing but CCA, and I HATE the CCA with a PASSION.  You chime in whenever someone talks about re-opening/complains about the rules and regulations of a fishery.  Your not a commercial fisherman, you don't need to put in your $0.02 cents every time someone brings something like this up.  We all know your against watermen, everytime you post you prove it.  Don't even say your not.  I'll bet you go trolling with 12 rods and 2 people, handle the fish, take 10 pictures, then throw it back and think it lives.  Now imagine you, times about half of the recreational fisheremen that don't know any better.  WORSE then gillnetting.
Im tired of hearing close close close too.  Regulate them, not me.  No one can tell you anything either.  Your right, all the time.  Its never the recrationals, always the commercials.  Hurt the people that NEED the money.
I'll probably get a "time out" for this.  If thats the case, BAN me.  I don't care.  When it comes to people like Tom wanting to take away a person's living little by little, I'll speak up.  I'm in commercial fishing, I understand.  I consider this a very mild posting to whats in my mind.  People like you make me SICK and Im tired of it.

I AGREE WITH TOM. THERE SHOULD BE NO DREDGING OF CRABS. ALL SEAFOOD HAS A SEASON AND TO DREDGE FOR CRABS IS WRONG.

no matter how tom feels it's already been decided by the courts that the dredge fishery will reopen when the crabs reach a certain level for a period of 3 years running. that was the outcome of the lawsuit that the watermen levied on the state, research it.

The guy asked how you could selectively not dredge up female crabs. . .  I guess I used the wrong tense in my answer.

I should have said They closED and paid the crabbers to catch ghost crab pots. . . rather than  You close the crab dredge fishery and pay the crabbers to catch ghost crab pots.  The first is a statement of what happened.  The second could have been interpreted as an opinion.

As to the law suit this is from the Virginia Watermen's web page.

"Norfolk Circuit Court Judge Jack Doyle ruled late Friday that Virginia is empowered to ban winter dredging for conservation purposes - but only one year at a time, and only after an annual scientific review, public comment and a public vote."

That doesn't say that they have to reopen the fishery. . . but time will tell.

BTW Ray. . . I am no longer on the CCA Board of directors, etc. so if you are going to pick on me you will have to do so for things I say and actions that I take, not actions or opinions of individuals of a group that I may or may not belong to says.

Oh and last year 90% of my fishing was from a kayak with light tackle in shallow water or sitting on a bank fishing for meat (croaker).  When I do happen to troll I use 4 rods and about half of the time I fish by myself.   When I catch a fish that is legal to keep, I generally do so.
