Morning all.  Not really sure how rare it is but google didn't have much info and neither did the marine biologist we called.  Even stated it might be a hermaphrodite.  Not sure it's the case after breezing thru some other posts here.  Either way was a cool catch.  Related link - http://articles.dailypress.com/2009-09-13/news/0909120064_1_blue-crab-savory-beautiful-swimmer-male-crabs

Just figured out what the metal rods are. They're his crutches because he lost a claw. Turn it over and check the apron. Should put doubt to any thought of hermaphrodisia. Different pigmentation isn't uncommon. Some deep dark blue almost purple, to the occasional white or partially white.
