Strange thing I noticed today.  When we would get a small crab in a trap, we just shake him or her out and reset the trap without bringing it onboard. There were numerous times (about 10 times or more) today, that the small crabs would just swim alongside the boat and wait for us to drop the trap again.  My wife would lower the trap about a foot into the water and the crabs were jumping right back into them at the surface.  I finally had to pull them onboard, grab them and give them a toss away from the boat. Some of the crabs were just under 5, around 4-4 1/2" and chewed the [curd] out of our bait.

I have never seen this before in 40 years of crabbing.  Huh

I also wanted to add, we were rowing the boat between traps, moving fairly slow. The motor was just too noisy to listen to on such a fine morning.

Next time, skip the traps and tie necks to the sides of the boat.  Take a camcorder with you so when you tell people they were jumping in the boat that day you'll have proof!

I had my camera, but didn't think about it.  My wife thought it was cool, re-catching the same crabs.  My arms in the mean time were getting tired of rowing.

keep teaching them. then, once they're legal size, they'll want to crawl right into the traps and not escape. Grin
