Is there a legal definition for the size of a bushel basket? I mean I have seen many different types of baskets, wood, plastic and so on. Some are taller than others and different diameters. Also whats a full basket? Even with the top, slightly over the top but not falling out. Does anyone know? I want to stay legal...Charlie

If you can fix the lid in place with the wires I think you are safe - however this would depend on the discretion of the one checking you - in todays times - mine are safe bushels.

Thanks Tat. But I have seen different size wooden ones too. I mean where does the law state the legal size of a bushel in exact volume or dimension's? Or is it up to the opinion of the Warden/Office ? Most laws I have seen have very specific definitions with hard numbers. But a full bushel seems a little vague...Charlie

This comes up all the time and I think the confusion comes in when people start referring to a circular basket as a bushel basket.

A bushel is a bushel - 8 US gallons.

A basket may or may not be 8 gallons in volume.  If not, like the 9 or 10 gallon plastic orange baskets, you could get in hot water with the law.

The main thing is to know that a bushel is 8 gallons & find an 8 gallon basket or other container to hold your catch to make sure you are following the law.

I buy my bushel baskets at the Vineland Farmers Co-Op (yes, where the truck load of bananas was recently hijacked.)    The have a stamp right on them dictating that they are 1 US Bushel.

It all depends upon whether you want the large bushel or the small bushel.

Code33,
Where did you get this info from? I just read the NJ regs and it stated 1 bushel...it didn't mention any count (144). Besides if you could fit 144 crabs in a bushel they would be really tiny crabs.

No, no, no, no!  NJ regulatory crab catch limits are based on volume, not numbers.  As previously mentioned a bushel is 8 gallons.  Convert to any other volumetric measurement you like.

How many crabs fit into said 1 bushel/8 gallon container of your choosing depends on how big the crabs are.  More crabs if they are smaller, less if they are big.
