We went out Saturday to catch some crabs in the Merritt Island Wildlife Refuge and we only caught 2!! First we tried the Mosquito Lagoon side and found 0 crabs. Next we tried the Haul-over canal and that's where I caught 2. A friendly photographer mentioned how that 2 weeks ago he witnessed some crabbers catching a lot of crab further down in one of the canals. We tried it and nothing!

We had no luck at all. I have been crabbing in Titusville for about 4 years and usually catch enough for 3-4 people to have a nice Blue Crab meal. But not this year. It seems we are always a few weeks late. We've been hearing stories of crabbers catching coolers full and the most we've caught this year is 8.

Our bait is chicken necks. We use ring nets, hand lines and wade through the shallow water with a dip net and nobodies home. We have a place where we can buy them but it is so much fun to catch your own!

This has turned out as a complaint and not a report. LoL!! Smiley

A friend of mine was crabbing commercially there today and said the catch fell way, off almost in half.     The catch has been real good there all spring and early summer.  I don't think they went anywhere they just got lockjaw for a few days.  They fell off in the St. Johns River for me the last few days.  They'll be back.
