Yes, they feed always except right before shedding and right after. It seems they have been schooling away from my traps lately.

Since one of a crabs top foods in other crabs, I doubt they school up. However they do travel, generally, in the same direction at any given time of the year.

Good answer!
Though I remember a time when one could drop a chicken neck in almost any part of the bay from the end of June to the middle of September and pull up a crab.
In the past 20 years or so it seemed that the crabs moved around from area to area and one would have to ask around on what tributary was "hot"
This year is the first year in a long time where positive crabbing reports are coming in from all areas of the bay. Is it because of the hot weather, the heavy snow fall last winter, the release of Females last year or just a cycle?

I like it best when they school up in my bushel basket.

Only time will yield that answer.

I hate when adolescent crabs take up smoking. It's a nasty habit.

a "school" by definition comes together when scared, like menhaden swimming in bait balls
a "group" hangs out together, prefers to be with eachother, but scatter when scared, like perch
crabs are solitary, but will congregate near common food or good environmental conditions
