Will find out for sure Thursday but I appear to have gotten an infection from crabbing.  I broke out in rashes a few days after crabbing. I thought it was mosquito bites but they popped up on hands, elbows, and bottom of feet.  I got bit by 2 crabs, one drew blood. I "washed" the cut in the dirty York River and "dried" it on my dirty shirt.  Apparently that is not wise to do Embarassed .   Hopefully the meds worked, I itched like a mother#$#@$ for a few days.  Anyone else ever get anything like this? I have gotten bit in NJ waters but never in VA waters.....

I wonder if it's a allergic reaction to eating the crabs?  Huh  My wife got the same thing all of a sudden.  She had been eating soft crabs for years and now can't even handle them.. Sound allot like what happened to her.  Rash and itching, etc.  Undecided

Jack,   years back my Dad twice had reactions to handling soft crabs just out of the shell...    Both times Dad was on vacation on the Eastern Shore and saw the same Doctor in St. Michael's, Md..    The second visit several years apart, the Doctor told him not to handle soft crabs just out of the shell.    He followed Doctor's orders and never had another problem from softies...

Joefroggy,    Have you ever had a reaction to Iodine??   Can you Post a picture of the rash?   Do you have water blisters??   Did the Doctor give you Dapsone??

Never had a reaction to iodine. No picture of rash, going away now.Not really water blisters, more hard blisters. No on the dapsone. Something like levaquine.  Never have had an allergy to crabs. Eat a lot of alaskan king crabs. I ate the maryland blue crabs about a month ago with no issues. This time big issue. But this time I did get bit by crab and drew blood. Rinsed in water, next time will hopefully have sanitizer or bandaids with me....

Don't worry froggy.
Allergies can pop up any time.
I found out I'm allergic to coconut. (I'm over 50 yrs old)

I can eat small amounts but can't use anything with coconut on my skin, which gives me a rash.
I found out using a girl friends shampoo with coco oil in it, then it happened again with sun tan lotion with coco oil!
Certain brands are worse than others.

Your rash could have been caused from any number of things.
Dryer sheets , laundry detergent, bug spray, something you ate...or even something in the water (algae) your body has just decided to reject.

I wish you well and keep us updated on your results from diagnosis.

Very good advice Wink

I've got a buddy that got stuck by a shell in June, he didn't think much of it until a few days later when the finger started turning black........he's still recovering with antibiotics.  Infection had gotten so bad in his finger they had to go in and cut a bunch of "dead meat" out.  At this point they've been able to save his finger but needless to say his crab season ended in June Undecided

I've never had the infection talked about here but a firend of mine (crabber) was poked by a point while culling. Within 2 days he was in the hospital, it spread from his hand almost to the elbow. They had to cut his arm open and scrape the infection out. My grandfather always carried a jar of bleach in the boat while fishing crabs, oysters or gill netting. A poke or pinch by anything was immediately washed out with bleach. I still use bleach and have never had a problem.

Sounds like a bacterial infection.  Won't kill ya just itch like h-ll for a week.  I got one from swimming in the creek a few years back.  Did you get any swelling with it?

Was at the ER 2x last year from infections in my fingers. 2nd time was 4 fingers at once. Seriously wanted to cut off my fingers they hurt so bad. Both times were after crabbing the Wye river.

I doesn't matter what body of water your in. That stuff lives everywhere. I've had it too. I've gotten it from the ocean. It's a naturally occurring bacteria. I put rubbing alcohol in a spray bottle and toss it in the boat.
