I was at the long wharf nature preserve in new haven crabbing with a net. I've been at it for 20 min and got two 5in+ hard blue crab.
Some guy comes over and says, "if you don't release these two, I'm calling the cops. It's illegal to shellfish here. There are signs everywhere."
I start to worry a bit, but realize I never saw any sign and my crabs sizes were just fine. So I ignore him, and he literally starts to call. I wasn't up for a fight, so I threw the 2 back and left.
Got home, checked all the rules and that site I was at DID allow crabbing. And I followed all the crabbing rules!
Have to vent here, dang I am pissed.
I'm going to print out the CT crabbing laws and the parks crabbing activity page. I won't be cheated again. Why do people wrongly try to destroy the happiness of others?

Sorry that happened...
I always make sure that I know the rules better than the enforcement guys. The only areas down here in Alabama that have been closed recently to crabbing was due to the oil spill... The crabbing rules here are probably not as strict as they are elsewhere but if i am going crabbing I want to know the rules before I go. Then if I decide to cross the line a wee bit...at least I know I deserved the ticket. or i can tell a jerk like that he can go pee up a rope..

You did right thing.
Getting into a confrontation isn't going to end good for either of you. Whether you're right or wrong. You never know what a nut job like that is capable of...you don't want to find out the hard way!!

It would be very hard if not impossible for me to walk away if I knew I was in the right. I would simply explain the facts to that guy then keep on doing whatever I am doing. There are a million of those types out there and if you let them have their way there would be no place to fish crab or hunt. Sorry but I disagree with the advice to leave. The State of Alabama stopped scuba diving in the rivers unless you had a permit. I fought them from the local marine police level to the state legislature.....and won. You can now dive in the rivers of Alabama without a diving permit. Don't let the any person or government stop us from enjoying OUR resources..

A buddy of mine was crabbing and the Norwalk CT Police boat stopped him and stated that there is no shellfishing in the area. They are correct! But the shellfish that was closed only includes bivalves like clams, mussels, and oysters. Not crabs or lobster; they are crustaceans.
A call was made to the Norwalk Police Department to straighten them out so they won't piss off someone else!

Shellfish are oysters clams mussels etc while crabs and lobsters are crustaceans. I would have let him call the cops. Was duck hunting in jersey on a river all legal and a resident threatened to call the cops. We told them to and talked to the cop and he was pretty cool about it all. Ct is weird though. CSC
