I have a question concerning taking of blue crabs in RI. Specifically, do "shellfishing prohibited" areas apply to taking of blue crabs?

On the RI DEM website that lists "Marine Fisheries Minimum Sizes & Possession Limits", blue crabs are listed under a different category than "shellfish". Based on this, it is my assumption that they are not included in shellfishing prohibitions and can be caught from areas that are deemed as "shellfishing prohibited" areas.

Additionally, I understand the restrictions on shellfishing areas is due to the possibility that residents would eat shellfish raw. Whereas blue crabs are always fully cooked; therefore no concern of bacterial contamination of the eaten crab meat.

Can anyone provide any clarification?

Shellfish prohibitions do not apply to crabs or lobsters.....Those shellfish closures just apply to bivalves like steamers, hard clam, oysters, mussels etc.......
