I wonder if the choice of name has any thin to do with the behavior I observed when keeping female was legal.

It appear to me the female was not as aggressive as the male, once placed in a basket they seemed to adapt very quickly, fold their legs under their body, tuck in the claws and lay there very peacefully. Where males seem to raise [Sam Hill] for awhile, snap at anything that moves for a longer time.  Some may never settle down.

You obviously haven't tried to get the crabs out of a bushel of females in late Oct/Nov. If you pick up one you get the whole dang bushel - they all grab onto each other and refuse to let go!
