Hi, after years and years on hiatus I am now just getting back into recreational crabbing.  I am very keen to follow applicable law, but I can't find a size limit in the New York regulations.  Can anyone help me out?  Thanks.

Interesting.  Looks like I could have kept the little 2.5" crab I caught at the end of the day.  My son wanted me to, but I felt bad taking such a little fella.

Well, at least I'm far enough up the Hudson that I don't have to worry much about whether to take female crabs.  All of the crabs we caught were male.

Really anything under 5, might be a waste of time to even cook, so little meat inside, might be good to flavor a red sauce though,  NJ min size to keep is 4 1/2" maybe use that as a guide larry, but thats probally why there ain't many big crabs left in jersey  JMHO

Hey Larry I am also up north on the Hudson ,I have crabbed for about 50 yrs on this river. Never found any regs on crab size. You just have to use your own judgement on size, any thing under 5in point to point we throw em back.tk care.   RJT

I wrote a email to the NY St ate DEC and ask them if they could tell me the size limit for crabs that can be taken in NY State and this is what they sent me:

http://www.dec.state.ny.us/website/dfwmr/marine/finfish/swflaws.html#marine

There is a 4 1/2 in. limit on Hard Shell Blue Claw Crabs
A 3 1/2 in. limit on Soft Shell Blue Claw Crabs
Peeler/Shedders 3in.

And no egg bearing females

50 per day limit Shocked

I hope that this helps you all. I am going to keep a copy of it to bring with me when I go crabbing, I hate seeing all the little crabs that are taken during the course of a day and when I say something to the people doing it they always say that they never saw a size limit anywhere for crabs.
WELL NOW THEY WILL!!!!! Wink
