Read through this entire thread (BTW, great info) and it seems that some were brave enough to try it; my question is, now that a year has passed, have more people attempted to eat this particular kind of Spider Crab, or have the previous intrepid respondents continued eating them? Thank you.

The results of the '08 election are now the beginning of our lesson.

After reading this really long thread I am still not sure what to do with spider crabs.

We have been trying to catch stone crabs this winter with very limited success.  But we really seem to have figured the spider crabs out, we are probably averaging 10+ per trap.

The claws on these are not big enough to eat, but many of the bodies are well bigger than my fist.  Does anybody really eat these, or is it just something people try to say they've done it.

How about use as fish bait or something?  We are throwing a whole lot of spider crabs back, it would feel better to find some use for them.

I read somewhere that spider crabs are in the same family as snow (tanner) crabs and are edible.  Whether or not (since they are so scary ugly) you want to keep them and eat them is another story.

After all the back and forth regarding the edibility of the common Spider Crab (Libinia emarginata); that they can be consumed without fear seems a given, as there haven't been any seriously taken reports of toxic response to Spider Crabs. Having said that, the issue then becomes whether anyone would want to eat them, given their ghastly appearance and distasteful reputation overall. I'm beginning to think that the only way to honestly get any semblance of an accurate answer would be in performance of a blind taste test; ie. where an eater doesn't know he's dining on Spider Crab. Granted, it's doubtful that this kind of Spider Crab would ever be used for the secret ingredient on a cooking show like Iron Chef, but I would envision that taste testers eat a sample of various boiled crab meat from differing species and then record their true opinion without the burden of any preconceived ideas. Now, the trick here is, does anyone want to potentially alienate friends or family by using them as guinea pigs in such an endeavor?   Grin
