So, maybe I'm wrong (it's happened, lol), but I think I found a hermaphrodite crab today. I was at a buffet with my family and we were enjoying some of the crabs that they had, when I opened up a really large male, or, what I thought to be male. He had male claws, male apron, but when I opened him up, I found this:

And a video (which I hope isn't as jumpy for you as it's being for me right now...):

So, is this crab a hermaphrodite? Or just some strange occurrence I've never heard of before? I do know for sure, this does NOT look like any male crab I've ever seen?

Thanks for any insights!

That's a really good question. I have seen this many times and wondered the same thing. While on vacation in cape may nj two years ago my family and i decided to buy some crabs. They were all "male" crabs but they all had that. I've seen it in Maryland a bunch of times too.

looks normal to me.  What exactly are you refering to/  Those pink sacks?  Females have egg sacks and males have sperm sacks

Is it only certain times they have this? All male crabs don't have them only very few that I've seen.

No Brittney, that is a very special crab there.  His name is Richard.  laugh

Just kidding.  That is a normal Jimmy.

laugh laugh. So why is it that only some have it and some don't? I've only seen it in really heavy crabs.
