"Buoys of any crab pot, eel pot, gill net or ordinary crab trotline, and an offshore stake of any crab trap, used for recreational purposes, shall be marked legibly with the licensee's last 4 numbers of his/her social security number or driver's license number, preceded with the letter "R""

If I'm running two pots, does the above apply, or does that only apply to licensees? If I'm a licenseless 2-potter is it even legal to mark my gear that way? If the water cops find a buoy with R and 4 numbers pre-season would I have a problem?

Yes, you must mark your two pot floats as stated.

If you have gear in the water out of season the vmrc officers will confiscate them... If they see you with the gear you "will" get a ticket. Cool

Thanks. So does that mean if I'm only running 2 pots, I still have to wait until June?

The season for commercial gear in the water is March 17th to Dec 1st.  That would be your 2 pots.  Like Russ said above, There is a 5 pot gear license that runs from June 1st until Sept.

The closure (March, April, May, Sept., Oct., and Nov.) of the 5 pot license was to be in step with the reduction of the number of pots the commercial guys have right now. The first year they reduced us to 4 pots.  Then the followiing year they gave us the 5 pots back but shortened the season. There is a good chance that we will get the whole season back next year.
