Hello, my father took one of my old box crab traps and made an experimental trap with it. It's sealed shut and has openings near the top for the crabs to go into and hopefully fall down and stay in until I pull the trap back up  Wink Anyways, is this considered a trap or a pot? It was a collapsible trap, and now it's not. Thanks for the input.

If it can catch crabs on it's own without your help (ie pulling up the trap to close doors, etc.)  it's a pot.

So do I need this $2.00 license? I tried to find some information about what this covers but it's unclear.

Make sure you have turtle excluders on the openings ....

I don't really understand how a TED would work for this. I was hoping I wouldn't need one. This trap was a regular box trap so it's not very big and the openings are rectangles, the TED devices I see are all rectangles already and would basically just fit over it. I don't have the openings pushed in like you would think so crabs cannot get out. I'm going to try it like this first because I don't plan on letting it sit that long (20 minutes maybe). It's simple not big enough to let it sit there very long because not many crabs would get in. The idea behind this thing is that when you use the box traps, crabs that are half in the trap escape when you go to pull it up. I just want to be able to leave this a little longer while I handline and not lose any when I pull it up. If crabs are getting out I'll have to redo it. What I want to do is take a box trap, make it non collapsible, and have openings closer to the bottom. I want to take fencing and make it slightly longer than the opening, that way crabs walk in and if they try to walk out the door simply cannot open because it can only push in. This is just going to be a 20-30 minute solution as well since again it's small and can't be left for that long.

The opening for this is near the top though, I would imagine crabs can still get in and drop down but we'll see.

If it can catch crabs without help from a human (ie pulling it to close doors, etc.) then it is a pot and falls under the $2.00 license.

If the pot is completed sealed up with a one way DOOR.  Are the crabs smart enough to find the part that can be pushed in and walk through it. It seems to me that almost the entire side would have to be the opening(big enough for the crab to find easily).

It sounds to me like your making a comercial style pot.  I would think you need the Turtle extruder and a whole for smaller crabs to exit.  i agree with Ron if you don't have to work the trap its a pot.

For NJ the pot would also need a biodegradable panel.  Sounds like a whole lot of work, but good luck with your experiment.

It's not about the two bucks, it was about whether or not I needed it or something else.
