Keeping just a few at the end of the year is much better than what many people on this site are keeping.

They are KEEPING what is LEGAL to keep. If you don't like it, maybe YOU should do one of the following:

  • Stop reading crabbing reports.
  • Call New Jersey Division of Fish and Wildlife and bitch at them.
  • Call your congressman, bitch at him and get him to change the law.
  • Just put a cork in it already - We get it.

Your constant comments about females makes me want to eat every legal female I catch - Just because I can!!!!!

This is a stupid statement.  One male crab can impregnate multiple females.

Better leave that male then.  Think of all the virgin females that won't have an opportunity to procreate because we took her fertilizer.

It is legal.  But one day the same people keeping females are going to cry about the lack of crabs.  People used to keep tons of herring, winter flounder, weakfish etc.  Look what has happened to those populations.  I don't think you can even keep a herring now.  You can keep two winter flounder and only one weakfish.

Everybody should do their part to make sure the crabbing population thrives for future generations.  If you catch 52 crabs with two being females, do you really need to keep them.  Isn't 50 enough?

Natural Resources has also put catch limits on those species.  Same thing they've done with crabs. That's how you manage a resource.  You let experts due the research and implement a plan.

So what to do with one like this? 8"+?  She obviously is at the end of her reproductive cycle and is done with sponges.  I've kept them before and will in the future.  Winter dredgers bring in way more females than all the recs combined. However This ole girl was so pretty I set her loose to swim another day.
