crabbing regs

does anyone know what the rule is ? One guy told me you can have as many hand lines and traps as I want in the water as long as they are attended. If they are unattended I would need a license, and that rule applies to trot-lines also is this right? So I asked what type of license is
needed ,and his answer was a commercial crabbing one. This would mean all most everyone on here has a commercial license that can be,can it? thanks p.s. i'm crabbing in NJ

The guy who gave you this information is not correct.
Under no circumstances can
traps
be unattended. You can have as many attended traps (not pots) and handlines as you want without a license.
You need a
Recreational Crab Pot License
in order two crab
pots
unattended, and they must be harvested every 72 hours. The same license allows you to put out a max of two trotlines, each of 150 linear feet in length with a max of 25 baits each.
NJ is currently not issuing any new commercial crabbing licenses. Existing licenses can only be transferred to immediate family.
