Finally, an 8" crab!

I know eight inchers are common for the Chesapeake crabbers, but they are unusual for the modest Hudson River crabber. But I finally got one this past weekend! Man, did he shock me. Crabzilla! I marveled at him for quite a while. He had all his appendages too, so he was very impressive. He had a deep crab-claw wound on his upper carapace, suggesting to me a fight, or maybe he ate another crab who gave him a souvenir.
Anyway, I put him in my bucket and then put another crab in on top of him. He was annoyed and reached up with a pincer and just snipped the pincer of the other crab clean off! There was a loud cracking noise. The big guys don't behave. He will be delicious in some gumbo tonight though.
Total catch, 15 crabs, in eight hours of crabbing. (That doesn't count a big crab that swam right out of one of my open topped traps, and a she-crab I tossed back in.) About average for the Hudson, where you usually get 2-3 crabs an hour with four traps.

Larry_D, Congratulations and Good Job! Wait till you eat him. He is full of meat and much more worth your time than a small crab. Bigger is better!
Please post your gumbo recipe under the recipe section, thanks.

Larry:
There is a place on this site for "Records and Citations" - a contest for the biggest crab from each state. I haven't looked up the 2005 New York record, but you should check it out and apply.
DON'T throw away the shell!! You will need to show a picture with tape measure in the background.

I just looked it up, and I guess I win by default, as there are
no
NY entries.
Last year's was 7" though, so I guess I am at least in the running. I did save the shell, and I will post a pic as soon as I have the chance!

Well at least you were smart enough to save the shell, you have a picture with a measurement or send CG the shell. Nice job.

Nice job!!!
I doubt there have been many 8 inchers coming out of NY. Been trying for 25 years in New Jersey and haven't managed anything that size yet.
