I've had some I kept alive for almost 12 hours.  They always seem to die and turn red not long after I put them in my steamer and put the lid on.

Never tried to keep a crab alive for any length of time, but when I was a kid we kept a pet crawfish alive for a couple of years.  She even molted once.  We kept her in a turtle bowl with some seashells in the bottom.  She used to rearrange the seashells at night.

I put three crabs in my aquarium (They lasted a week until i cleaned the aquarium and tried to make my own saltwater) and they did fine together...Granted it was only for a week but they all started in there together..

If you haven't done it yet, search the word aquarium.  Theres a bunch of topics about keeping crabs alive in aquariums.

When you do water changes only do partial changes.  Like, 25% per week...  Wink

Ok!! I take it "instant ocean" will be what i need to use....I'll have the initial tank filled with actual saltwater from the beach! That worked well the first time...obviously

There was an article about it in the now defunct FAMA (online only now) magazine I recall on how to keep crabs as a "pet".

Instant Ocean is by far the best economical choice for a tank with just an invert (such as a crab) or fish, short of getting the water yourself.

Once you establish the tank, you need to be sure the tank has some nitrifying bacteria to consume and break down the inevitable messiness of a crab eating.

After that, evaporation will occur and you will need to "top-off" the water with regular water.  Ideally the water is distilled or from a RO system rather than straight tap, but crabs are pretty hardy so I guess tap might work.  Keep in mind tap water may eventually damage the pumps you may have in the tank due to the mineral build-up.
