Headed out Friday afternoon. Weather was seasonal. Light NW winds and sunny. Headed to a piece where they are feeding really heavy. Historically a doe spot but with the rut in full swing....where else would you want to be? I wasn't in the tree 5 minutes and I had a good doe coming...but she didn't like something and away she went. About 20 minutes later a smaller doe comes in and eats for a while and she finally heads off. Then a little after that...I hear it. I hear the chasing going on @ about 5:00 (direction)...where it usually goes on....up behind the houses. I turn and see horn. I didn't see the whole rack but saw the body and knew it was a big buck. I hit the grunt twice...and here he comes. He bumps the doe he is pursuing  a little and he is right behind her. They are now both 20 yards @ 3:00. It will be a miracle to get a shot off...besides that's right where my trail is.  The doe stops and starts walking right to me. I'm struggling to get into a position to shoot. Being right handed and haing to shoot that way is almost impossible. As I'm trying to swing...he looks right up at me. Any other time of the year...I think he would've been gone. He didn't care b/c he was on the trail of this hot doe.He turned broadside and in one (not so swift) motion I let it fly..........

I'm sitting in the stand watching deer run away up towards the houses and then cut back in to the big woods....pretty much in a state of disbelief...."I ******** missed" I said to myself. I text my brother the same. I got down within ten minutes even though there were still deer around. At least if i could find my arrow sticking out of the ground clean I would have piece of mind that inded, I missed. I get down and I can't find my arrow, or blood or anything. I shot around 5pm mind you. Right before dark...I find my arrow...under leaves. One vane missing...a little hair, what appeared to be some gut and some very very watery blood. I'm used to blood soaked arrows so this was not very comforting eventhough I now know I did not miss. Well, I mark that spot and get my light out just to see if I can find any sign of hope within ten yards. I found some decent blood. I stopped there and made the decision to let it sit overnight. Like I said, it looked like some gut on the arrow (it did not smell however) so the best thing to do in that situation is to let it go until morning. Temps were plenty cold enough as well...so no meat loss If I find the monster. As you can imagine, Friday night was as nerve racking as you can get for a hunter. I tried to imbibe a little more than usual and that didn't work. I finally fell asleep around 1am and got up at 5am.  I call in reserves and recruit my buddy Mark to help me track in the am. I'm waiting for him at my spot about 20 minutes and he arrives. We get to the scene and started finding good blood right away and were just walking steadily on the trail. I got excited a bit too early and thought a big log was the buck. A minute later, there he was!!!! Made a good shot...maybe two inches back from where you really want it but considering my position...was a good shot. This is my biggest rack to date.....and the biggest bodied deer I've killed in NJ. Was about 150lbs and that is HUGE for South Jersey.

Hope you enjoyed the story of the hunt.

Good luck to everyone.

Nice buck.  I shot one at 5:15 on Nov 6th had no idea how I hit him. Found one speck of blood then decided to come back next morning.  I must have walked right by him as he went about 100 yards and died.
