It depends on the salinity you are looking for.  I try to match it to where the peelers are caught. Marsh and rivers average 5ppt, where the bay can be 20ppt. I keep the salinity in my 150 gal system at about 12ppt.  I need to add 11-lbs. of "Instant Ocean" to the 150 gals. at start up to get the 12ppt. After start up you will only need to add fresh water do to evaporation as the salt stays in the system.

I got about 95% shed rate with 1 tbsp per gallon in a 30 gallon tank. I use tap water and add antichlor and salt. Still have clams alive from last year.

I use a deep six hydrometer (amazon for about $8) to get my salinity to about the same as the water where I catch my peelers.  I use aquarium sea salt from pets mart (this you can buy on line a little cheaper).  I have been shedding crabs since 1987 using the same method each year with pretty good success.

anyone care to share a pic or two of their set up?  I presume it's either a wet dry set up , or a "live" rock set up?  or just a sponge filter?  not that i need another tank in the house... Tongue

I found something for you Ron, it's an anti-clam disguise. It may come in handy, a little extra protection.
