Is this a trick question?
In a way yes it is,I pondered this question for a while, then looked for other views from other people, and I came to the conclusion that it varies how many we need. This past weekend my goal was close to 3 bushels and fortunately I got them,I wasn't being piggish, fri I split close to 2  with a guy,sat I went out for a friends party and kept none.Next weekend my needs will be totally different.I may not crab,so in a way it's a track question with no set answer. How many do you need,Tom ?

if the bag limit for deer is 2, do you only take 1? same for game birds and water foul. when crabs are running hot, i'll cull at a larger size, but i'm still going after my bushel. jmho.

oK I have an revised answer.. I need enought to feed Frank and supply his friends crab feasts.....    laugh laugh laugh laugh laugh

Sorry Frank Just Kidding.....  BTW where's my beer?

B54, response to your point is each state varies on bag limits....

Deer in MD you an take 36 deer if you hunt BP, shotgun, and bow...buck then 2 doe with a mqax of 10 doe then second buck with bonus stamp per weapon......plus bonus hunts at parks etc which don't count towards these numbers.  Most folks would say that is excessive.. In PA 1 buck and 1 doe only with permit for county, region zone applied for months in advance and that is super limtied to get a doe tag... so extrme example of two states that shae a border and mountains and resources and vastly different view of bag limits.....
..........so take what you need or can use with n the rules is probably the best answer...... but the deer thing between MD vs PA is so extreme on both ends....

Dan bring the spare crab meat to me and  I will take care of packing and freezing it for you... might even show you how it's done correctly.  However I have found when you freeze 4 lbs of crab meat it only ends up yielding back 2 lbs when you freeze it   Roll Eyes Roll Eyes Roll Eyes Roll Eyes Roll Eyes Roll Eyes Grin

let me know so I can get vaccuum bags etc for you... buddy I will take great care of any spare crab meat you need put up for the winter....

Soups, dips, crab cakes, etc.    Vacuum sealing works well.

I use a Foodsaver vacuum sealer (from Walmart). I mix a little milk with the crabmeat before sealing* and get good results.

That said, the quality of the meat will decrease slightly, but that's to be expected with any food that is frozen - nothing beats fresh.

Best investment for any freezing, beef, pork, veggies, fish, crab, anything worth freezing is worth using a vacuum sealer!!!

I may go crabbing 10 to 15 times a year. I try to catch my limit every time. But i may only catch my limit 4 or 5 times a year. Maybe a little more now that i have expanded my gear. But no crab goes to waist. I have friends and family over for crabs and give some away or eat them in a few days. If I have enough left over then I will freeze some for the winter. But i usual dont start freezing until the fall when the crabs are bigger and easier to catch.

Thanks for the tip. I usually vacuum seal the meat, but I have never tried the milk trick.

Great tip, Bruce.  One question, though.............how do you get the cow into the bag?
