I usually use bluefish for bait but having a hard time getting them this year.  Anyone know if dogfish will work?

Any fish frame will work. Use what ever you can get locally. We used flounder racks from a fillet house for 50 years and never had a problem.

I refuse to buy bait for the traps.  I never had a problem using my own bycatch. I fish for just about everthing.  This is the worst year for me EVER !   Ive been out almost twice a week since may 15th.  All striper/bluefish trips with the exception of 2 fluke trips when it opened. limited on fluke both times but all I have to show for the other trips is 4 keeper stripers and 2 shorts and only 1 per trip.  No blues. I can usually fill the boat if I wanted too, but man, I got some kinda hex on me this year.   I can get plenty of dogs so if they work I`ll resort to that.  It killed me to use some of my frozen bunker bait last time out.

Yes it will even after its been cut. I worked on a trawler and we would save barrels of skate for lobster fisherman . That work well to . Hope that at helps.

I`ll give the dogs a shot.  Lobstering in the sound has been tough enough, I hate to blow trips cause of bad bait. I know skates work, I don`t even have any of them .

Does not hurt to talk to your local fish markets either.......Salmon is a big sale item and they are bought whole by the market. Salmon racks fish awesomely! I trade a six pack of beer for enough salmon racks to bait my ten pots with one of my local markets. Won't kill you to dumpster dive after hours at your local fish markets either......But I would not recommend that in the warm months.......yuk!!
