Picked up 20 traps from Dan (fellow member) last weekend.  First time I'll be running traps, hope it helps increase the numbers from last year.   Im hoping to get out a few weeks earlier in the season and crab deeper with the traps, and to use them to scout areas before laying the trotline.

I'm not sure how effective scouting with traps before dropping the trotline would be.  I typically run both. Sometimes the crabs hit the traps and not the trotline, sometimes the other way around, & it varies run to run. Sometimes they hit both and other times neither one.  But one thing is for sure.  The more baits you have in the water the better chance you have catching crabs.

I've added a brand new 23 ft carolina skiff dlv. I bought everything new for this rig. I just went and picked up one of captain Bruce's stainless trotline props tick/ ramp and they are very nice. Now I just need some good weather to work out the bugs

This year I'm converting my steering to hydraulic.  Also doing some maintenance items since last year was slow, I didn't use the fishing and crabbing boat much and just used our express cruiser for family outings and a few adult trips.

New cushons for the front deck of the skiff for the kids to lay on , new cushon for passangers but and back in front of the consel...STILL WORKING on new stereo system with weather band and in dash remote . This is/will be my first dedicated crabbing season. I'm a fisher and hunter and have recently been bitten by the crabbing bug.

I've got 5 topless traps that i bought off amazon, then i found this site and the thread that outlined exactly how to make my own (by a fella named old crabber i think). I cut out enough wire mesh for 6 more topless traps, i just need to make the frames, etc. and put em all together. I can't wait to get out there.

Long story short, all my equipment is new except the boat and coolers  Cool

A kayak' 2 commercial traps with lic. 6 galvanized franklin traps (for dock crabbing)  A ton of sinkers. And about 1 mile of twine to restring the traps throught the season. And still need about 12 topless traps.

I just repair and rigged 20 traps with new 25' lines and floats in anticipation of some late season, deep water crabbing.

decided to "up my game" and add 1200' of trot line to my working gear
bought the pre-tied snoods at the fishing show
shorted me 4 out of the 2 bags
went well above and beyond with the "perfect" floats, chain, weights
even ground down & cold galv-ed the weights
designed a really cool prototype roller assembly

lost the roller assembly over the side of the boat on saturday, after running the line only a couple times
clearly my really cool prototype had a couple technical flaws

still need to build a handful of traps to replace the ones i have lost over the last couple years

Should be running those deep lines during the assault. Maybe you're name will hit the plaque some summer Wink

Unless current+wake took your over the edge of the steep drops that are all over Patcong.    Those two things can cause a buoy to "nudge" a trap off the edge of one of those ledges and into the deeper water where the trap will either sink, or the buoy will carry the trap through the deeper water with the current/tide.    The drop offs are so steep that the back and of the boat can read 6' and the front end is @ 18'.

Happens all the time there.
