Since the water temps are up around 60, I can't wait any longer to start the season and am making the drive from Raleigh to go crabbing this weekend.

This is my first time crabbing in North Carolina... Does anyone have any suggestions on any piers to check out? I was thinking of heading to Topsail Island, but would really appreciate any suggestions or tips on spots to go. I don't have a boat so I'm limited to piers  Undecided

I'll post a report Monday morning!

Hey there- sorry that I am just now reading your post. Topsail/ Surf City is where I crab at. You had a great weather weekend so you should have done well. Hope you went to the public pier just past the swing bridge. IM me sometime and I'll point you to a few other spots that get less pressure.

Hey thanks for the messages. I hit the pier right past the bridge and it was beautiful out there. Sadly the crabs didn't think it was nice enough. I only saw two (stone) crabs the whole time I was out there, apparently the blues just haven't come in yet.

I called around to some local seafood shops in town and they said it'd probably be 1-3 weeks til they start getting them.

Can't complain though - The weather was great and I saw 3 dolphins playing in a boat's wake right by the bridge when I got there at about 7-7:30 am!

I was out at the park/pier area just past the swing bridge 2 weekends ago.  This was my first attempt at crabbing in NC.  Do you guys crab from the pier where everyone fishes, or the smaller mini piers along the bank?  I dropped a few baskets from the small bank piers and got about 6 little guys.  The fishing pier was very crowded.

I tried both of them when I went, but haven't been back since. Hopefully headed back down there in two weeks..
