Isn't it time to stop keeping females? Crabs that is. It just doesn't make sense to me to allow this to continue with crab populations the way they are.

MD recreational crabbers (with certain regional exceptions) can't keep them.

Have you even read the dredge survey?

Seems to me finding out what is killing the small crabs would be a better place to start.

Maybe the problem is the Jumbo Males are depleted, what about a Moratorium on all Male Crabs over 5 1/2"??   If the females don't have Males to breed with your not going to make babies... Wink...The commercial Crabbers in the lower Bay have paid a price with strict limits on females,it's time for the guys in the Upper Bay to help...  JMO.............

It only takes one male to service a boat load of females. That's the whole idea of shooting a buck not doe. See how many deer are around today.

I agree with gene, males crabs over a certain size should have to go back. A slot limit maybe.

You can't take too many of either gender. It has to be balanced as nature intended.

I also agree with open season on rockfish. I think you should remove the spring trophy season to let them reproduce unmolested, but either up the daily summer limit or reduce the size to 16". Or both!

How much were they "up" in 2012?

Where did they go?

Put a Moratorium on jimmies over 5 1/2" then the Mombo's can breed with the females..That should make for a better crab stock..

Agree 100%.

I don't want a forest of spike bucks breeding with my does, I want the monster 12pt stud. Same with crabs.
Raising the limit, just puts a bullseye on all the monster 12pts because the spikes are off limits.

I don't think a moratorium is needed at all.  Enforcement of current laws and more programs to protect the environment so the juveniles can mature would be my suggestion.  This would protect existing jobs that rely on harvesting of both male and female crabs and be environmentally friendly.

I am not an expert in crab genetics, I would assume they are somewhat different than deer, hey but who knows??

So the idea is only keep males between 5 - 5 1/2 inches. Or 5 1/4 - 5 1/2 inches depending on the time of year. I don't agree with it. Think of how many people have trouble making sure they are over 5 inches let alone that they aren't too big  Roll Eyes . Not enough grasses from pollution, too many rock.

more programs?    that's the problem now.
my definition and yours probably differ;

program-replant eel grass so existing juvis can survive and hide from rockfish.
program-raise mature female crabs to reproduce juvi crabs and release into bay.
program-buy wetlands/protect from development...again so that you have marsh/eel grass etc.

As always the point gets lost. Rockfish population may need to be controlled...another subject. Controlling the commercial harvest of female crabs can be and should be done immediately. I don't want to hear comms sob stories. We are all in this.
