Does anybody know if it's legal to seine for crabs in NJ? I haven't seen any official source that says no, but I think I remember people on an old thread saying there were all types of restrictions. Just saw a seine net in a store the other day and it got me thinking.

it is illegal to seine  for crabs in NJ  BUT  you can seine for bait  and any crabs  that  are caught  can be kept   you need a bait seine license  and the seine  can be no longer than 50 ft  and 4-5 ft high   and pulled  by hand

Exactly. A "commercial" marine bait net permit will cost you $12 annually. You get to keep any "by catch" that would be legal to catch recreationally by other methods (I think that is an accurate way to put it). You are obligated to report your catch statistics, but that requirement seems to be loosely enforced by the marine division of NJFW.

I have a 30'x4' that my dad bought years ago. Never used it for crabs but have caught many small ones. Paid for itself after 1-2 uses from all the bait we caught. Shiners, minnows, hermit crabs, pipe fish, seahorses, spot, killifish, croakers, horseshoe crabs, flounder( 2 keepers in NC) are some of the stuff we have caught over the years. One of my favorite things to do on vaca and kids love it. Make the investment!! Its more then worth it Wink
