He'd let me stay at his house over Labor Day weekend for the Hard Crab Derby. He was a great man. I hope his son Matt is doing OK, he took over Whitey's cookbook business when Whitey retired.

Sorry to hear about Whitey. Just found out . I saw him many times at the Maryland Seafood Festivals at Sandy Point Md. each Sept. I enjoyed his books and articles. One article got me going about "slurping oysters" in the Chesapeake Bay magazine. For 50 years I would not touch a raw oyster now I love them.

I also liked Whiteys story about how he would buy a bag of crabs and eat them while driving in his car from Md to Va. What a crab eating guy, He had probably seen every crab shack and house in Md Va and Del. over 275 of em . Many of them long gone.. RIP Whitey.

I watched the video of Whitey recently and was intrigued by his story, especially the segment where it describes eating crabs using his favorite crab knife from Carvel Hall. Last week I was treated to a bunch of crabs from Sambo's in Leipsic, Delaware. I just happened on a whim to ask the barmaid if she knew Whitey and she said Miss Elva, the proprietess of the restaurant, probably did. Miss Elva proceeded to tell me that Whitey had been in the restaurant a few weeks (months?) ago and had dropped off a package wrapped in white paper. She told me to wait and she came back with a package she had not opened yet. Whitney had given it to her while telling her he was probably there for the last time and wanted to give her something to show his appreciation. The package turned out to be three brand new Carvel Hall crab knives! She then told me that Whitey that day told her he had had a great life traveling and meeting the most genuine people in the Chesapeake community of crabbers and wouldn't have changed anything. To my amazement she gave one of those Whitey knives which I will cherish forever and pass on to my crabbing kids! What a story to pass as well. Thanks, Whitey!
