Spearfishing Category Added to Record Fish Program
«
on:
July 30, 2014, 02:24:08 PM »
Recognizing that spearfishing is growing in popularity, and that "spear gun hunters" routinely harvest fish that equal or exceed current marine state records, the NJDEP Division of Fish and Wildlife has created a new Spearfishing category in the State Record Fish Program. The spearfishing category will recognize spear fishers who have obtained a level of proficiency that allows them to harvest exceptional specimens.
For more information on the program, including eligible species and their minimum weights, visit

on the Division's website.

Wow, that's cool, but they still won't recognize a new state record crab. Doesn't seem fair!

Doesn't seem fair because it's not fair.

Blue crab just sits there under retired historical records. But it is also listed under the current records - So, why won't they accept any more?

How do you retire a record? That's like trying to retire time. Record crabs will continue to be caught whether the state likes it or not.

The NJDEP Division of Fish and Wildlife has officially certified the first entry into the new Spearfishing category in the State Record Fish Program.
Robert A. Davis of Bamber Lake speared the record fluke (summer flounder) on August 4, just five days following the initiation of the new Spearfishing category. The fish weighed in at 15 pounds 5 ounces which exceeded the minimum weight of 12 pounds. The fluke is also being recognized as a World Record by the International Underwater Sprearfishing Association.
For more information, including a photo of the new record fish, visit

on the Division's website.
