We are headed to Ocracoke island next week (8/17/14).  I'm a regular Maryland crabber and I was hoping someone could point me in the right direction for catching a few jimmies or doing some fishing near Ocracoke island. Unfortunately, the boat is not making the trip, but I'm taking the angler sea kayak with 16 ring traps and nets for the kids.  Any help, suggestions, ideas are welcome.  Hoping that the kids get to net a few crabbies on this trip and dad could catch a couple of flounder as well.

Thanks

All behind the island in the little creeks and ditches should bring you a bountiful harvest of crabs and flounder

Buddy just got back from obx sunday. Said fishing was horrible. Worst in 15 years. I will say this. Buy about 6-8 packs of good shiners and take along because the bait places are sup-par down there for that kind of stuff. Minnows are scarace right now and the shiners he did find in the stores were tiny!! Take your own bait along and fish the dropoffs along the ferry channels on the northside of the island toward hatteras. I always hammered them around day markers 17&18.

When I am on Ocracoke I rarely see any male crabs apparently they can not tolerate the higher salt content in the water (so I am told). Maybe the males hang out in deeper water Huh I see lots of female crabs in the grasses and ledges...JMHO, I spend three weeks a year there and I do a lot of boating around the back of the island and over to PortSmith Island.
