Newbie here.

I was under the impression that crabbing was like fishing that you had to throw back the undersized ones as you caught them, but reading here and watching videos of trot liners, I get the impression you can put all the crabs in basket and at some point later cull out the short ones.  So my question is when do you legally have to cull them before you are breaking a regulation keeping undersized crabs?

Down here its when ya put a top on the basket.  As long as they are in a open basket/box/cooler you are pretty much ok. HOWEVER, I'm 99.9% sure that here in the VA code it states that "dark sponge and shorts are to return to the water immediately".  There is also a tolerance allowed for the number of illegal crabs/bushel.

X2.   Use a plastic basket as the work basket and a wooden bushel as a keeper basket.
