Hi. I've agreed to organize a Y-guides (like boy scouts) trip to go crabbing this fall. We are out of Raleigh so anywhere is good but the closer the drive from Raleigh the better. I've crabbed twice using the line and chicken method so that is what we are planning.

If anyone knows of a good, reliable, spot where I can get 7-10 people crabbing without crowding, I'd love to hear about it. This is be the first time for almost all of them so I'd like to make it a fun experience. If there is a place we could rent a hunting cabin or somesuch near the crabbing that would be even better.

Trip will be mid-October.

Kill Devil Hills would be a possibility. As I said we are coming from Raleigh for an overnight weekend trip so would consider anything.

If you have Kill Devin Hills ideas, I'd love to hear them.

Have you looked at Lake Matamuskeet? You can scare the kids with stories of GIANT crabs that eat children.

I have been missing my youngest son and dog for about 3 days, I was too scared to go back into the brush after them while crabbing. :p I am kidding.....my youngest son is 22 and don't think will be left behind, the dog however O.o lol. But yes Mattamuskeet is a good place too if you're just hanging out in Manteo and want a day trip there is't only about 1.25 hour drive. Get there early for crabbing, like 6amish. Seen a guy thou the other day pulling nice keepers from Far Creek canal wish is I suppose the boat ramp in Engelhard.

Manteo is a nice area for crabbing and its not normally crowded at all after labor Day weekend. There are a few docks Wildlife ramp areas . Underneath the high rise bridge going from Manteo to Wanchese there is a boat ramp and a public pier that twists and turns and has lots of room that may suit you. You can fish off of it as well.  There is another ramp in the town part of Manteo near the ship ( Queen Elizabeth  I think ) that has a nice area to crab at. One last place on the sound side- Cross the bridge into Mann's Harbor ( OLD highway 64 ) and there is a public dock there with a gazebo that you can crab and fish off of
