Bait in New Jersey
«
on:

I crab in Southern New Jersey and the ony bait I've seen in the bait shops for crabbing is bunker. This works pretty well for traps and pots; and I've used bunker for hand lines. But from monitoring this forum I see that chidken/turkey necks and eels are a preferred bait. I've seen discussions about salting eels, so I'm thinking about trying that; but does anyone know of a source for chicken/turkey necks in Southern New Jersey?

Try your local grocery store. They will order them for you. I get them for 45 cents a pound at my local store.

Yup- grocery store often has them. Even if they arent in the 'for sale' section, ask the butcher. Sometimes they just throw them away.

Here in Philly,if you want chicken necks..go to Wilson's Prime Meats...$24 for a 40 lb case
but be forwarned, you might have to get them special order.....they will call ahead and order them for you,but it will take a day or so
luckily for me I have a big freezer in my garage,so I can order 2-3 boxes at a time

ORDER THEM EARLY IN THE SEASON IN PHILLY. LAST YEAR I CALLED 3 PLACES IN JULY ,INCLUDING WILSONS, AND I COULDN'T GET THEM. SEEMS THEY DON'T MAKE IT THIS FAR NORTH COME CRAB SEASON. I WORK PART TIME AS A COOK AND OUR DISTIBUTORS COULD ONLY GET BACKS, THAT THERE WAS A SHORTAGE OF NECKS THIS TIME OF YEAR. BACKS ARE TOUGH WITH A TROT LINE. HAD TO REDESIGN MY PROP STICK WITH A LARGER DIAMETER PVC PIPE SO IT WOULDN'T
