NJ National Saltwater Angler Registry

 I was just told that even if you just crab in NJ you have to sign up for the free NJ  National Saltwater Angler Registry
 I cryed Bull  but it seams in NJ crabbing is fishing  I am not sure if this is true  but Since it is free I am not taking a chance  Two years ago it was for people who fished for Stripers, sea bass and several others   Now it looks like it is for anyone who fishes tidal waters
 I also just saw it on a Bait store web site

WHO NEEDS TO REGISTER?

NOTE: Anglers with a valid registration with the National Saltwater Angler Registry or have a valid license from another exempted state are required to register (for free) with the NJ Saltwater Recreational Registry Program. Registration with NJ will exempt you from having to register with the National Saltwater Angler Registry.

Individual saltwater anglers ages 16 and older MUST register if ANY of the following criteria are met:
•Recreationally fish with a hand line or rod and line, spearfish or fish by hand
•Recreationally fish in the marine and fresh tidal waters of the State of New Jersey
•Recreationally fish in marine waters outside the State of New Jersey but land the catch in New Jersey

You were given incorrect information.   You do not need to register to crab recreationally.     Note the highlighted section from the FAQ section of the NJDEP website:

#31:  Will I need to register in order to harvest crabs, mussels, clams, lobsters, shrimp and other shellfish?

A:    It depends on the targeted species and the method used to harvest. If recreationally harvesting shellfish, an individual is not required to register, but it is likely that other license or permit requirements apply to those species.  Registration is required when recreationally fishing for finfish or lobster when using any of the following recreational gear:  spear, hook-and-line, hand line, rod-and-line, or by hand. Although recreational crabbing does not require registry, there may be other licenses and permits required to harvest crab or lobster with commercial gear.  That's good news  bad news is the person I was talking to does this for a living  But  to be fair We were talking about lobsters and crabs in the bay  So he is only half wrong
