Got a Maryland crab pot and nothing seems to be going in it. I used to leave it overnight and would get a dozen usually. Now I put it in when I am at a crabbing spot for at least fours hours and nothing? Do these need to soak for longer periods of time? Have the crabs figured  out the bait is too hard to get at in there and just do drop lines and traps???

Wonder why that is different from just using a hand line or trap? Takes them longer to get into the pot?

Be Patient and a dozen can be a good Soak,  depending on the size of pot I wont go into the other 52 reasons why you were not satisfied, Just be aware of Regulations, Placement, Bait, Tides, and Good luck you will find your honey hole of Crabs,   Oh and Be very Se-creative of where  Wink

Huh Huh Huh Huh Secure a line to it, Bait it, Place in water hopefully that contains Crabs, Retrieve said trap remove Crabs, Cook Consume. The end results toilet   Cheesy   That's as correct or proper as anyone can get,
Like I said you will do Good, Bill

It's always been my experience that pots don't work very well during daylight. Seems they don't like going inside them when they can see the wire above them. This is the reason that the topless throw traps work so much better than the classic fully enclosed ones.

I used to arrive at my spot, pick up the crabs in the pots from the night before, usually a couple to few dozen, then rebait and put back out while we crabbed. At the end of the day, I would pick them up again and be lucky to have 10 in there.

Like in Real Estate. location. location. location.

I've caught plenty in same day drops and pulls.  The location just like regular traps is key.

Also the trap MUST ABSOLUTELY lay top side up.   I have a window sash weight and a brick wiretied to the inside bottom inside the trap to help ensure that.   But floats will PULL OVER the trap in stronger currents and render it useless and empty bottom junk.

So if it's laying right. . . . .  your location is NG.
