I was reading the VA regs and it appears that the spring loaded Crab Alert trap is legal in VA but will require a recreation crab license.  Does anyone one know for sure or have any experience with these and the correct regs?  Planning on taking niece (age 4) and nephews (age 7) crabbing and got these so they wouldnt be pulling up a collapseable basket and could watch for the floating ring to come up, while we tried hand lining as well.

I would appreciate any info or guidance.  I will be calling VMRC tomorrow to see what I can find out also.

Thanks in advance.

By the way- this will be my first time crabbing too.  Lots to learn .

Called VMRC.  Louis was super nice and helpful.   These traps are considered commercial and can do 2 per person and have to have them marked with R and id number per code.    Great info nothing too difficult to do.

Strike that.  They do not have cull rings installed.  Will just try with hand lines.  Return un-opened ones to bass pro.  Keep one to see if I can put in the cull rings.
