Thinking of a new theory. It is said that if there are a lot of skates in the area you won't find crab. But wouldn't it make more sense that since skates eat crabs if you see a lot of skates then that may mean there are a lot of crabs there for them to eat? My buddy caught 1 1/2 bushel about 10 days ago on western side and said the skates were almost thick enough to walk on. After 25 years of crabbing the Wye and a few other rivers I have learned one thing. There are no true theories when it comes to crabbing.

Might be on to something. We caught 4 bushels Wednesday and the skate were all over us.

Rec crabbed Saturday and caught 1/2 bushel. Not a skate in site

Commercial day off is either Sunday or Monday

or self chosen if you are willing to be a part of the pilot "hail-in hail-out" program.

I don't believe the skate scare crabs theory completely because there is too much evidence otherwise as these crabbers have posted. Maybe if not enough of any available bait species but why tangle with a full grown crab if plenty of other is available. Fish are breaking everywhere this year and the crabbing has been hot.
