Hello,

I just moved to Ocean County, NJ (Beachwood) and am ready to start crabbing.

I have crabbed a few times at the fishing pier near Seaside, is there any other near places to check out or is this a good spot? Is it worth renting a small boat there and going out on the bay and what date does crabbing season begin.

Thank you
Frank

Hey Frank  - glad to hear your crabbing.

I just really got into it about 2 years ago myself so I don't know a lot of different spots - but that, however, is because I've had such great crabbing in Seaside....so I don't venture out much beyond there.  At the I think what is called the 5th Avenue pier - basically go to SSP and make a right when you get to the police station - it will practically bring you right there.

I don't use traps.  Handlines only for me - load em up w/ a nice chicken thigh(yes, thighs work best) and set em out...I tend to stay towards the end of the pier...but I've had a lot of succes closer to shore.  Work at least 5 lines at a time and check them often.

I've done well using this method and very often when no one else is catching I still will be.....can't explain why and I sure wish I had as much luck when fishing for stripers at Island Beach State Park.  This usually out-crabs all bunker(fresh or frozen),butterfish, etc....

I hear of other piers in Lavallette and other places along Barnegat Bay - I would imagine there is good crabbing all there.....good luck.
